“Rangaroon” The New Rural Destination 

This forgotten vicinity Picnic Tour spot is located to the east of Darjeling town.

The altitude is about 2 thousand meter from sea level and the distance from Darjeeling town is nearly 16 km. Rangaroon is situated right below world famous Tourist destination Tiger hill and the jeep able road divers from 3rd Mile or Cinchona on way to Peshok Road.

Surrounded by the oldest Sinchel wildlife sanctuary and Rungdung, Rangaroon echoes the proud possession of historic Botanic Garden, Forest Dak Bungalow, solitary picnic tour spot and the trek route of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute.

Rangaroon commands the incredible view of morning sun rays over Mount Kanchenjunga, eastern part of Darjeeling town and Observatory hill top. Places like first Tea garden Aalubari, Mak Dhog Monastery, Gorkha Recruiting Depot,  Tiger hill, Jorbungla, Pandam tea garden, Gorkha stadium and southern district Head quarter Naamchi and Tendung hill, Mainam hill or famous Bhaley Dhunga can be viewed from here.

The village based Rangaroon Explorers Group has started self sustainable village tourism with the support of East Flanders Province Govt. Belgium here since 2012. It offers comfortable overnight stay and eating facility at two storied Rangaroon Trekkers Hut.

The trained and experienced members lead various activities for visitors like Tea factory, Bungalow and tea plantation visit, short hikes, cultural shows, camping, bird watching and rock climbing etc.

Places of Tourist interest

Tea plantation & Tea factory:  The Chinese tea species and the hydraulic powered plants machinery tools are the prime attraction of visiting Rangaroon. Though the century old tow storied hydraulic Tea manufacturing factory built by German native Fedrick Von Frostmaan has stopped functioning for so many years but one can still observe how water source was being used as prime support for art of tea producing.

Due to its location right below 8 thousand feet Tiger hill, the moist full climate here considered conducive for yearlong tea leave shoot harvesting.

River Rungdung: River Rungdung or Dahria is located below the village tea garden. It is nearly 40 minutes walk to reach river side where the uncompleted project of water pumping for Darjeeling town can be seen. It’s a place for locals to come to celebrate different occasions and enjoy picnics.

A night or two camping here is worth staying. One can enjoy traditional fishing here and swimming.


The Observatory cave: Visiting Rangroon won’t be interesting without seeing the Observatory cave. It’s a holy place for villagers as well as the outsiders. Its is believed the rock cave is abode of Goddess Durga. Every year people here offer perform special worship to seek good fortune and blessings.

Rangroon Sale Centre: newly initiated Sale Centre at Rangaoon provides opportunity to buy locally made goods as the souvenirs. Local formed women self help groups are engaged in this field.

Rock climbing: Nearly 80 feet high Saano Mann Rock here offers to learn the art Rock climbing, Jummering, repeling and river crossing out here. The instructor hers gives the basic idea of climbing as well as information about gears.

Bird watching: Birding or bird watching is the newly started sort of research Tourism. As a bordered village of the first Senchel Wild life sanctuary in India, Rangroon is homeland of indigenous bird species as well as seasonal birds of the Eastern Himalaya. The area is covered nearly 50 species of birds, number of butterflies and noted medicinal plants life.
